Part of the Index Scout "Game-making assets" series: free sources organized by genre, downloaded and checked on our own machine. This entry covers cozy games, room decorators, house builders, shop sims and top-down town RPGs.
## When to use
Use when an agent or developer needs free, commercial-safe furniture, house-building pieces, little characters, a shop interior or 2D indoor and town tiles, plus a tested grid placement helper for a "decorate your room" mechanic.
## Tested packs (all CC0, downloaded and checked 2026-10-21)
| Pack | What's inside (counted) | Link |
|---|---|---|
| Kenney Furniture Kit | 140 models (GLB, FBX, OBJ each): beds, sofas, kitchen, bathroom, desks, plants, lamps, rugs, plus 560 isometric renders (4 views per item) | [kenney.nl/assets/furniture-kit](https://kenney.nl/assets/furniture-kit) |
| Kenney Building Kit | 79 modular house models: walls, floors, flat roofs, stairs, gutters; 8 door models carry open, close and open-and-close animations | [kenney.nl/assets/building-kit](https://kenney.nl/assets/building-kit) |
| Kenney Mini Characters | 12 characters (6 female, 6 male) plus mobility aids and 4 wheelchairs; the GLBs include 32 named animations such as idle, walk, sit, pick-up, interact and wheelchair moves | [kenney.nl/assets/mini-characters](https://kenney.nl/assets/mini-characters) |
| Kenney Mini Market | 20 shop models: shelves, freezers, cash register, fruit and bread displays, an animated employee and animated doors | [kenney.nl/assets/mini-market](https://kenney.nl/assets/mini-market) |
| Kenney Roguelike Indoors | 2D 16 px indoor tilesheet, 27 x 18 tiles with a 1 px margin (transparent and magenta versions) | [kenney.nl/assets/roguelike-indoors](https://kenney.nl/assets/roguelike-indoors) |
| Kenney Tiny Town | 2D 16 px town tiles: 132 single PNGs plus packed and spaced tilemaps (12 x 11) | [kenney.nl/assets/tiny-town](https://kenney.nl/assets/tiny-town) |
Checks we ran: all 265 GLBs have a valid glTF 2.0 header with a length matching the file and parseable JSON; all PNGs (987 across the six packs) have a valid PNG signature; every download contains a License.txt stating CC0. Tilesheet sizes match the documented 16 px tiles with a 1 px margin.
## Grid room decorator helper (tested)
Places furniture with a footprint on a grid, rotates in 90 degree steps, blocks overlaps and out-of-room spots, and saves or loads the layout as JSON. `tileRect` picks a tile from a Kenney-style 2D sheet.
```js
// Grid room decorator: footprint rotation, overlap and bounds checks, save/load.
export class Room {
constructor(w, h) { this.w = w; this.h = h; this.items = []; }
cells(it) { // footprint [fw,fd] rotated in 90° steps
const r = ((it.rot % 4) + 4) % 4, [fw, fd] = r % 2 ? [it.fd, it.fw] : [it.fw, it.fd];
const out = []; for (let x = 0; x < fw; x++) for (let z = 0; z < fd; z++) out.push([it.x + x, it.z + z]);
return out;
}
canPlace(it, ignore) {
const used = new Set(this.items.filter(o => o !== ignore).flatMap(o => this.cells(o).map(c => c + '')));
return this.cells(it).every(([x, z]) => x >= 0 && z >= 0 && x < this.w && z < this.h && !used.has(x + ',' + z));
}
place(it) { if (!this.canPlace(it)) return false; this.items.push(it); return true; }
rotate(it) { const t = { ...it, rot: it.rot + 1 }; if (!this.canPlace(t, it)) return false; it.rot = t.rot; return true; }
save() { return JSON.stringify(this.items); }
static load(w, h, s) { const r = new Room(w, h); JSON.parse(s).forEach(i => r.place(i)); return r; }
}
// Pick tile N from a sheet with tile size t and margin m (Kenney: 16px, 1px).
export const tileRect = (n, cols, t = 16, m = 1) => ({ x: (n % cols) * (t + m), y: Math.floor(n / cols) * (t + m), w: t, h: t });
```
### What we tested (Node 20.19, `node:assert`, all passing)
- A 2 x 3 double bed places in a 6 x 5 room; a desk overlapping it is refused; a sofa hanging past the wall is refused, and the same sofa rotated 90 degrees fits.
- Rotating the bed into the desk is refused and leaves the bed unchanged.
- Save then load restores all three items.
- `tileRect` math lands the last tile exactly at the edge of the Roguelike Indoors sheet (458 x 305) and the Tiny Town spaced sheet (203 x 186).
### Wiring it up
- Three.js: load Furniture Kit GLBs with `GLTFLoader`, raycast the mouse onto the floor plane, `Math.floor` to a grid cell, call `canPlace` to tint a ghost preview green or red, and set `mesh.rotation.y = -it.rot * Math.PI / 2`. Footprints aren't in the files; measure each model's bounding box once (`new Box3().setFromObject`) and round to cells.
- Play door animations from Building Kit or Mini Market with `AnimationMixer` and the clip named `open`.
- Godot, Unity, Unreal: import the GLB folder with its `Textures` folder; the helper is plain math, easy to port.
- 2D: use the Roguelike Indoors or Tiny Town sheet in Tiled, Godot TileMap or Phaser with tile size 16 and spacing 1, or Tiny Town's packed map with spacing 0.
