"content": "# Free RTS Units, Rigs & Animated Vehicles (Blender, Unreal, Unity, Godot)\n\nPart of the Index Scout \"Game-making assets\" series: free sources organized by genre and engine for people building games with AI. Search the tag `game-assets` for the rest of the series.\n\nThis one is about **parts that move**: rigged units with skeletons and animation clips, vehicles with separate turret, gun and wheel nodes, siege weapons with separate arms, plus retargeting and procedural-animation tools. For static RTS tiles, castles, hex maps and flow-field pathfinding, see the companion skill **Free Tower Defense & Strategy Game Assets**: https://promoteindex.com/skills/free-tower-defense-strategy-game-assets-blender-\n\n## Tested on our box (2026-10-19)\nWe downloaded each pack and read it with Python (`pygltflib`). These numbers come from the files themselves, not from marketing pages.\n\n| Asset (license) | Skeleton | Separate moving nodes | Animation clips |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| KayKit Adventurers `Knight.glb` (CC0) | 1 skin, **41 joints**: root, hips, spine, chest, upperarm.l, lowerarm.l, wrist.l, hand.l, ...; `handslot.l` / `handslot.r` weapon sockets; IK-foot and foot-roll controls | Weapons ship as separate glTFs to parent to `handslot.*` | **76**: Idle, Walking_A/B/C, Walking_Backwards, Running_A/B, Running_Strafe_Left/Right, 1H/2H/Dualwield melee attacks, 1H/2H_Ranged_Aiming/Reload/Shoot, Spellcast_*, Block*, Hit_A/B, Death_A/B, PickUp, Interact, Use_Item, Throw, Cheer, Dodge_* |\n| Quaternius Universal Animation Library 1 [Standard], Godot GLB (CC0) | **53 joints**, Rigify DEF- names (root, DEF-hips, DEF-spine.001-003, DEF-hand.L, DEF-foot.L) | n/a (animation library) | **46**: Idle_Loop, Walk_Loop, Jog_Fwd_Loop, Sprint_Loop, Crouch_Fwd_Loop, Sword_Attack (+_RM), Sword_Idle, Pistol_Shoot/Reload/Aim_*, Punch_Jab/Cross, Death01, Hit_Chest/Head, PickUp_Table, Fixing_Kneeling, Push_Loop, Interact, Roll (+_RM), Spell_Simple_* |\n| Quaternius Universal Animation Library 2 [Standard], `UAL2_Standard.glb` (CC0) | **65 joints**, Unreal-Mannequin-style names (root, pelvis, spine_01-03, neck_01, Head, clavicle_l, hand_l, foot_l) | n/a | **43**, including RTS worker clips: **TreeChopping_Loop, Farm_Harvest, Farm_PlantSeed, Farm_Watering, Walk_Carry_Loop**, plus Sword_Regular_A/B/C (+_Rec, _Combo), Sword_Block, Shield_*, OverhandThrow, Hit_Knockback (+_RM), Zombie_Walk_Fwd_Loop |\n| Quaternius Animated Tanks, 4 GLBs (CC0) | **45-joint track armature** (Root + TankTrack1-22.L/.R) skinning TrackMesh.L/.R | **`Tank_Turret`, `Tank_Gun`**, `Tank_body`, `TrackMesh.L`, `TrackMesh.R` | **4**: TankArmature\\|Tank_Forward, Tank_Backwards, Tank_TurningLeft, Tank_TurningRight |\n| Quaternius Animated Mech Pack, 4 FBX (CC0) | Armature \"RobotArmature\" with one skin each. About 62 bones (George), 24 (Leela, legs only), 58 (Mike, Stan); 3-segment walker legs and IK PoleTargets | n/a | **19-20 each**: Idle, Walk, Walk_Holding, Walk_Tall, Run, Run_Holding, Run_Tall, Shoot, Punch, Kick, SwordSlash, HitRecieve_1/2, Death, Pickup, Jump, Dance, Hello, Yes, No |\n| Kenney Car Kit 3.1, 50 GLBs (CC0) | none | Every vehicle has **`wheel-front-left`, `wheel-front-right`, `wheel-back-left`, `wheel-back-right`**; ambulance adds `door-left` / `door-right`, delivery adds `door` | 0 (spin the wheels in code) |\n| Kenney Castle Kit, siege GLBs (CC0) | none | siege-trebuchet: `arm`, `weight` x2, `catapult` x2, `wheel` x4; siege-catapult: `catapult` + 4 `wheel`; siege-ballista: `arrow` + 2 `wheel`; siege-ram: `ram` + 6 `wheel`; siege-tower: 4 `wheel` | 0 (animate the parts in code) |\n\nNotes from the tests:\n- **The tank's `Tank_Gun` is a sibling of `Tank_Turret`, not its child.** Either reparent the gun under the turret in your engine, or rotate both around the turret pivot (see the snippet below). The nodes carry a -90 degree X rest rotation from the FBX export, so add yaw on top of the rest rotation instead of overwriting it.\n- In these files the tank barrel points along **-X** from the turret, not +Z. The snippet works out the rest heading from the node positions, so it does not need to know which way the model faces.\n- The mech bone counts come from scanning the binary FBX for LimbNode models, because there was no Blender on the box. They are approximate; open the files in Blender for exact numbers.\n- The headline counts (\"120+\" for UAL1, \"130+\" for UAL2) include the paid Source tier. The free Standard GLBs have 46 and 43 clips. The itch.io UAL2 Standard (v2.2, 28 Sep 2026) also ships root-motion and in-place versions and is newer than the OpenGameArt mirror.\n\n## Rigged units: where to get them\n- **Quaternius Universal Animation Library 2**: \"Free to use in personal, educational and commercial projects. Blender users can stay in Rigify |\n| KayKit Rig_Medium | lowercase with .l/.r: hips, upperarm.l, handslot.l | 41 | Use the KayKit Character Animations, which share the rig. For other rigs, retarget in the engine |\n| Mixamo | mixamorig:Hips, ... | not downloaded (needs an Adobe ID) | Supported everywhere. The UAL2 page says it is \"Compatible with other common rigs (Mixamo for example)\" |\n\nRules of thumb:\n1. Pick **one** humanoid skeleton per project and retarget everything onto it.\n2. Retarget in a matching rest pose. UAL ships an `A_TPose` clip; KayKit ships `T-Pose`.\n3. Use the in-place clips for RTS units and drive movement from your pathfinding. Root-motion clips (`_RM`) are for cutscenes or special attacks.\n4. Non-humanoids (tanks, mechs, horses) do not retarget onto humanoid clips. Use their own clips, or rig them yourself.\n\nDocs and tools:\n- Godot retargeting: https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/tutorials/assets_pipeline/retargeting_3d_skeletons.html · SkeletonProfileHumanoid: https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/classes/class_skeletonprofilehumanoid.html\n- Unreal IK Rig and retargeting: https://dev.epicgames.com/documentation/en-us/unreal-engine/ik-rig-animation-retargeting-in-unreal-engine\n- Unity Humanoid Avatar: https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/AvatarCreationandSetup.html\n- Blender Rigify basics: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/addons/rigify/basics.html · metarigs: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/addons/rigify/metarigs.html (the predefined metarigs include Basic Quadruped, Horse and Wolf, which suit cavalry and beasts)\n- UniRig (AI auto-rigging, including non-humanoid meshes): https://github.com/VAST-AI-Research/UniRig. Apply the yaw as a world-Y rotation multiplied onto each node's rest quaternion, and turn it a little each frame (clamp degrees per second) so the turret tracks instead of snapping.\n\n### Wheel spin (Python, tested on Kenney Car Kit `truck.glb`)\n```python\nimport math\ndef wheel_radius(gltf, node): # Kenney wheels: axle on X, so radius = half the Y/Z extent\n a = gltf.accessors[gltf.meshes[node.mesh].primitives[0].attributes.POSITION]\n return max(a.max[1]-a.min[1], a.max[2]-a.min[2]) / 2\n\ndef spin(angle, distance, radius): # rolling without slip: theta = s / r\n return (angle + distance / radius) % (2*math.pi)\n```\nTest: all four `wheel-*` nodes measured radius 0.300 (mesh extent 0.35 x 0.6 x 0.6, axle on X). Four 0.25-unit steps gave 3.333 rad, matching 1.0 / 0.3. Each frame, set the wheel's local X rotation to `spin(...)` using the distance the unit moved.\n\nTank tracks: the Quaternius tanks already have skinned track bones, so play `Tank_Forward` or `Tank_Backwards` with playback speed scaled to unit speed, and the turning clips while rotating in place. For a tank without track bones, scroll the track material's UV offset by distance / track length. We have not verified a CC0 or MIT shader for that.\n\n## Open-source RTS engines and starter kits\nStars and last-push dates are from the GitHub API on 2026-10-19 (UTC).\n| Project | License (quoted) | Stars | Last push |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| Godot Open RTS: https://github.com/lampe-games/godot-open-rts. Adobe's FAQ says \"You can use both characters and animations royalty free for personal, commercial, and non-profit projects\". Adobe's licensing FAQ also forbids \"Any type of free distribution of character or animation raw files\", forbids asset packages that redistribute them, and says the only research use not allowed is \"training machine-learning models\". **Never commit Mixamo FBX files to a public repo, and never list them as a download.** It needs an Adobe ID.\n- **Beyond All Reason art is not reusable.** Its LICENSE.md says \"All other models and textures are under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license\" and \"This license does not permit any derivative work ... taking any artwork and including it or its derivative in any other game\". That includes the popular Unreal MCP repo https://github.com/chongdashu/unreal-mcp and the Unity IK spider above.\n- CC0 packs need no credit, but crediting is kind. Kay Lousberg asks: \"please don't resell unmodified copies or claim them as your own.\"\n\n## Gaps we found\n- No free CC0 buildings with *animated* moving parts (opening gates, cranes, rotating radar). The workaround is separate nodes plus procedural tweens, or rigging them yourself in Blender.\n- Few free rigged cavalry and quadruped units. Use the Rigify Horse/Wolf metarigs or UniRig.\n- No verified CC0 or MIT track-scroll shader or formation library.\n\n## Prompt tip for your AI coding agent\n\"Use one humanoid skeleton (Quaternius UAL2 naming) for every infantry and worker unit and retarget all clips onto it. Use the in-place clips and drive movement from pathfinding. For tanks, aim `Tank_Turret` and move `Tank_Gun` around the turret pivot, clamped to a max turn rate. Spin Kenney `wheel-*` nodes by distance / radius. Don't add Mixamo or BAR files to the repo.
