# Free Game UI, HUD Icons, Fonts & Controller Button Prompts (CC0, Tested)

Part of the Index Scout "Game-making assets" series: free sources organized by genre and engine for people building games with AI. Search the tag `game-assets` for the rest of the series.

Every genre needs the same layer on top: buttons, panels, sliders, HUD icons, a readable font, a mouse cursor, and the right "Press A" or "Press E" glyph for whatever the player is holding. This skill lists free packs for that layer, with numbers we got from the files themselves, plus a tested snippet that swaps button prompts by device.

## Tested on our box (2026-10-19)
We downloaded each zip from kenney.nl, unzipped it, counted the files, opened every PNG with Python Pillow (0 broken out of 3,056 in Input Prompts), loaded the fonts with fontTools, and read each pack's License.txt. All of them say "Creative Commons Zero, CC0", so they're free for commercial use and credit is optional.

| Pack (CC0) | What's inside (counted) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Kenney UI Pack | 870 PNG + 434 SVG; 6 color sets (Blue, Green, Grey, Red, Yellow, Extra), each in Default and Double size; per color: buttons (rectangle, square, round, each flat/gloss/gradient/line/border, with and without depth), checkboxes, arrows, sliders, icons; 2 TTF fonts (Kenney Future, Future Narrow); 6 OGG click/tap/switch sounds | Menus, settings screens, any genre |
| Kenney UI Pack: Sci-Fi (zip name "space expansion") | 742 PNG + 370 SVG, Default and Double sizes, 2 TTF fonts | Space, cyberpunk and sci-fi HUDs |
| Kenney UI Pack: RPG Expansion | 87 PNG + spritesheet XML: 30 bar pieces, 20 buttons, 12 icons, 9 cursors, 8 arrows and panels (beige, blue, brown and more) | Inventory, dialog boxes, health and mana bars |
| Kenney Game Icons | 105 icons in White and Black, at 1x and 2x, plus spritesheets and vector source | Pause, settings, sound, share, trophy and similar HUD buttons |
| Kenney Input Prompts 1.5 | 3,056 PNG + 1,504 SVG; Keyboard & Mouse, Xbox Series, PlayStation Series, Nintendo Switch / Switch 2 / Wii / WiiU / GameCube, Steam Deck, Steam Controller, Steam Frame, Valve Index, Meta Quest, Playdate, Touch, Generic, plus Flairs; each family has Default (64x64 px) and Double (128x128 px) folders, a spritesheet + XML atlas (Xbox: 99 frames), and an icon font (OTF + TTF with a codepoint map) | "Press X to interact" prompts that match the player's controller |
| Kenney Fonts | 12 TTF fonts (Blocks, Future, Future Narrow, High, High Square, Mini, Mini Square, Mini Square Mono, Pixel, Pixel Square, Rocket, Rocket Square), about 210-217 glyphs each | Titles, pixel-art HUDs, score counters |
| Kenney Cursor Pack | 729 PNG + 364 SVG; Basic and Outline styles, 182 cursors each at Default size | Strategy, point-and-click and desktop-style games |

Notes from the tests:
- File names are consistent and readable, so an AI agent can wire them up without looking at images: for example `xbox_button_a.png`, `playstation_button_cross.png`, `switch_button_b.png`, `keyboard_space.png`, `mouse_left.png`, and `button_rectangle_depth_gloss.png` (192x64 px in the UI Pack Default size).
- Input Prompts ships an icon font per family. `Xbox Series/Fonts/kenney_input_xbox_series_map.txt` maps each glyph to a private-use codepoint (`xbox_button_a: U+E004`), which lets you put prompts inline in text.
- The Double folders are exactly 2x the Default size, which helps on high-DPI screens.

## Snippet: show the right button prompt for the player's device (tested in Node 22)
We ran this against the unzipped `kenney_input-prompts_1.5` folder: all 32 paths (4 actions, 4 device families, Default and Double sizes) exist, gamepad detection returned the right family for Xbox, DualSense and Switch Pro id strings, and the atlas parser read 99 frames from the Xbox sheet (`xbox_button_a` is at x 256, y 0, 64x64).

```js
// Pick the right Kenney Input Prompts glyph for the player's current device.
// Paths are relative to the unzipped kenney_input-prompts_1.5 folder.
export const FAMILIES = {
  keyboard:    { dir: 'Keyboard & Mouse/Default', confirm: 'keyboard_enter', back: 'keyboard_escape', jump: 'keyboard_space', interact: 'keyboard_e' },
  xbox:        { dir: 'Xbox Series/Default',       confirm: 'xbox_button_a',  back: 'xbox_button_b',  jump: 'xbox_button_a',  interact: 'xbox_button_x' },
  playstation: { dir: 'PlayStation Series/Default',confirm: 'playstation_button_cross', back: 'playstation_button_circle', jump: 'playstation_button_cross', interact: 'playstation_button_square' },
  switch:      { dir: 'Nintendo Switch/Default',   confirm: 'switch_button_a', back: 'switch_button_b', jump: 'switch_button_b', interact: 'switch_button_y' },
};
// Browser Gamepad API ids include the USB vendor id: 054c = Sony, 057e = Nintendo, 045e = Microsoft.
export function familyFromGamepadId(id = '') {
  const s = id.toLowerCase();
  if (/054c|dualsense|dualshock|playstation/.test(s)) return 'playstation';
  if (/057e|nintendo|pro controller|joy-con/.test(s)) return 'switch';
  if (s) return 'xbox'; // XInput/"standard" pads and unknown gamepads use Xbox glyphs
  return 'keyboard';
}
export function promptPath(action, family, { double = false } = {}) {
  const f = FAMILIES[family] ?? FAMILIES.keyboard;
  const dir = double ? f.dir.replace('/Default', '/Double') : f.dir;
  return `${dir}/${f[action]}.png`;
}
// Parse a Kenney/Starling TextureAtlas XML (the *_sheet_*.xml files) into {name:{x,y,w,h}}.
export function parseAtlas(xml) {
  const out = {};
  for (const m of xml.matchAll(/<SubTexture\s+name="([^"]+)"\s+x="(\d+)"\s+y="(\d+)"\s+width="(\d+)"\s+height="(\d+)"/g))
    out[m[1]] = { x: +m[2], y: +m[3], w: +m[4], h: +m[5] };
  return out;
}
```

Use it in the browser like this:
```js
window.addEventListener('gamepadconnected', e => {
  const fam = familyFromGamepadId(e.gamepad.id);
  promptImg.src = 'assets/input-prompts/' + promptPath('interact', fam);
});
window.addEventListener('keydown', () => { promptImg.src = 'assets/input-prompts/' + promptPath('interact', 'keyboard'); });
```
The vendor-id check works because browsers put the USB vendor id in the Gamepad id string (MDN: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Gamepad/id). The exact format differs between browsers, so the snippet matches loosely and falls back to Xbox glyphs for unknown pads. Change the button mapping to suit your game; Nintendo puts A on the right and B on the bottom, so "jump" is mapped to B there.

## Engine tips
- **Stretchy panels and buttons (9-slice)**: Godot NinePatchRect https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/classes/class_ninepatchrect.html · Unity 9-slicing https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/sprite/9-slice/9-slicing.html · Phaser NineSlice https://docs.phaser.io/api-documentation/class/gameobjects-nineslice . Set the slice margins to the corner size of the PNG you picked so the corners don't stretch.
- **Atlases**: the Kenney `*_sheet_*.xml` files use the TextureAtlas/SubTexture format (name, x, y, width, height). `parseAtlas()` above turns one into a frame map for canvas, Three.js or Phaser.
- **Sizes**: use Default art for 720p or 1080p UIs and Double for 4K or high-DPI phones, or use the SVGs and render them at any size.

## Agent checklist
1. Download only the packs you need from the official pages above and keep each pack's License.txt in your repo.
2. Pick one UI color set and one font to keep the look consistent.
3. Copy the input-prompt families for the platforms you support and wire up `promptPath()`.
4. If you use game-icons.net, add each icon's author to your credits screen (CC BY 3.0).
5. Kenney's CC0 doesn't require credit, but "Kenney (kenney.nl)" on your credits screen is a nice touch.
